Materials needed:
– white T-shirt, tank top, or cotton dress
– 2 rubber bands
– 3 colors of powdered dye
– 3 squeeze bottles or squirt bottles
– soda ash
– plastic bag
– scissors
Directions
1. Lay your garment on a flat surface.
2. Hold the center of the garment, both the front and the back. Hold it through both layers.
3. Wrap the first rubber band tightly about 2 inches from the center of the fabric.
4. Then wrap another rubber band 2 inches further away (remember that the width between the colors is determined by where you place your rubber band).
5. Mix the powdered dye according to the instructions that are written on the dye package. Make sure that you wear rubber gloves!
6. Put a different color of dye in each squeeze bottle or squirt bottle. Then shake the bottles well to mix.
7. Over a plastic sheet, squeeze or squirt one of the dye colors on to the center of the shirt. Make sure that you squirt the colors into the folds and the crevices of the fabric. Then apply a different color of dye to another area. Then put the last color of dye to the last area.
8. Place your project into the plastic bag. Seal the bag and let your project set for about 2 to 3 hours.
9. Remove the fabric from the bag. Then rinse each colored area one section at a time. Try to make sure that none of the dye runs into the other areas; otherwise you will end up with muddy and smudged colors.
10. Remove the rubber bands.
11. Lay the garment flat so that it can dry. Or you can dry it by placing it in a dryer with an old towel.
