What Tools You Need for Wood Crafting

in Uncategorized

Basic woodworking is a craft that just about anyone can learn to accomplish with a little desire, hard work, and understanding of wood types and the proper tools. As with any type of crafting project, having the right tools is extremely important. Without them your project can become frustrating and difficult to finish. This article will address what tools you need for wood crafting and also what tools you might need for specific wood crafting techniques.

Basic Tools

If you are a beginner to the world of woodwork then finding some beginner tools is what you want to do. One of the most important things to get before you go and by everything is a functional workbench. This may not sound like a “tool” but in fact will be one of the best things you ever purchase. Your workbench should be proportional to the size of work area you will have. So if you’re working in a small, confined space don’t go out and by a workbench that takes up half or more than half of the space. Make sure the workbench is made out of a good quality hardwood like oak so it will be sturdy and durable. In your workbench you will want to have some drawers to keep your tools in and possible a shelf underneath to store some extra scraps of lumber. As well as a workbench you will also want to find something to hang on your wall to store the majority of your tools in. Tools are a hazard to everyone if they’re left out in the open or just lying around the room.

Now for some basic tools you will need. Since woodworking (and other tools) tools are expensive you might just want to start out with some basic hand tools. These include (but are not limited to):

Crosscut saw
Backsaw
Dovetail saw
Coping saw
Curved claw hammer
Wooden mallet
Tack hammer
Standard screw driver & a Phillips screwdriver
A bar clamp
Miter box

Nail set
Measuring tape
Knife
Protractor

This will give you a good start to your basic tool collection. Keep in mind that when purchasing hand tools, go for a well known brand that you or others are familiar with. Buying cheap tools will give you a cheap finished product. Good quality tools will last longer and work better.

Tools for Wood carving

If you thinking of trying wood carving for a woodwork project there are some fairly specific tools that you will want to look into buying:

Chip-Carving Knife. This knife is mainly used for whittling and chip carving.
Carpenter’s Chisels. Look for chisels that have a flat edge which tend to dig and twist into wood better than others. They will give a crud, unschooled look and are best for sculpturing.
U gouges and V gouges. These tools do just what they are named for. The U-Gouge is used for a “U” shape into the wood. The V-Gouge is designed for carving a “V” shape into the wood giving it a sharper look. You can also purchase “bent” and “spoon” gauges.
Palm Tools
Mallet

Wood burning tools

If you are into wood burning or want to get into it there are specific tools need for this wood crafting technique also. Some of the basic tools needed for wood burning are:

Pliers
Sandpaper
White transfer paper (needed for the pattern)
Graphite paper
Wood burning pen

If you use dark wood then you will want to use white transfer paper; light wood you will use graphite paper. Wood burning pens can be purchased for as little as $50 but make sure you get one that works well and will last through your projects.

Finding the tools you need for wood crafting is important and finding the right tools for what you’re doing is even more important. Whether you are carving, burning, or just working on a simple wood craft, make sure you get the supplies you need.
